In October 2021, Hawk saw a clip of Williams at Chandler Skatepark, skating while reporting live on TV. The skatepark at Chandler Park officially opened last year - and that’s when our Victor Williams first caught the attention of the 10-time X Games gold medalist. “I feel like anyone that goes to Detroit to go skate, especially the pros, they feel the energy there and they want to keep coming back,” Hawk told Local 4 reporter Victor Williams last year. Outside of those ties, though, Hawk believes that Detroit’s skate scene is unlike any other. Hawk says his wife is from Detroit, so he has family ties and an emotional connection to the city. The professional skateboarder has helped create more than 700 skateparks across the country, but Detroit holds a special place in Hawk’s heart. Hawk’s organization The Skatepark Project teamed up with a number of organizations and sponsors to make the skatepark a reality for Metro Detroit skaters young and old.

“See you on the other side.DETROIT – Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk stopped in Detroit this weekend to celebrate the grand reopening of the Chandler Park Skatepark on the city’s east side.

“Thanks to my unyieldingly supportive, tolerant family – and all of you – for the love and support through the years I wouldn’t be here without you,” Hawk concluded his post. Hawk said he was confident he’d return to skating despite the injury, admitting that it may not be at full capacity, but that his age is beginning to restrict his boarding. “A broken leg – with plenty of hardware – will probably be the biggest test of that creed,” he wrote. Hawk added that he won’t stop skating until he is physically unable. The answer is complicated, but ultimately it’s because I have found my sense of purpose and shaped my identity through skating, and it nourishes my mental health immensely.” He continued: “There is a strange irony that this happened on the eve of HBO releasing a trailer for ‘Until The Wheels Fall Off,’ Sam Jones’ documentary about my life career, which has a strong focus on the philosophy of how I/we do this at our age.

I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full comeback this recovery for a broken femur will be much harder because of its severity (and my age). He took to Instagram with the news of his injury, saying he faces a long road to recovery.Īlongside a photo of his X-ray and a video of himself on crutches, Hawk wrote: “Yesterday sucked. Hawk, 53, who retired from professional skateboarding in 2003, still skates often. Tony Hawk has broken his leg, which he admits may affect his future in skateboarding.
